November 2020 Newsletter

Author: Roger Francis (Chairman (SWC)
Dear all,

Next  Meeting  Sometime in the future?

Well little did I think when I saw the Bewick swans departing back in the spring that they would be back at Slimbridge (having flown to Russia and back) before I was there next, I only hope that we get to meet there before they depart next spring. The first swans returning this winter turned up on the morning of the 5th November.
I know that most of us are members of WWT and will have seen the latest edition of Waterlife, but I wonder how many saw Guy Taplins “Up Curlew” that is up for auction for the saving-spoonbilled-sandpiper project. The silent auction starts on Monday 16th November and bidding will close 5pm 20th November. Presumably the successful bid will be announced at:
https://www.saving-spoon-billed-sandpiper.com/
It will interesting to see what the selling price is. If WWTs suggested price is right (£5,250) we definitely do not charge enough for our carvings!
If you want to place a bid!! You have to register by emailing katie@messums.com
It remains to be seen what WWT will do when the current Lockdown finishes I see they are advertising both Swan suppers and that Father Xmas is arriving on the 12th December
Sadly WWT have stopped the daily reporting of what birds are about on site and now produce a weekly report the week ending the 14th November has seen a mixed flock in excess  of 1000 geese, 1600 Lapwing, 600 Golden plover and over 2000 Wigeon, plus many other waders and passerines, so winter migration is well underway.
Hopefully looking to meeting up in the near future I would like to sound out the members to see if anyone has any suggestions that would help to rejuvenate the group ( apart from Sanatogen).
Does anyone have a suggestion for a project that we could all participate in, this is of course assuming that we are allowed out in the near future.
As our annual luncheon won’t be taking place before Xmas, should we consider a Spring Luncheon.
Should I approach WWT about putting on a display/sale of our work in the Gallery.
If anyone has any suggestions for the group or anything that I could put into an email please let me know.

Lastly I am fairly sure that I know the answer but would anyone like any of the following:
A Brace and bit, a small hand bench grinding wheel, numerous spanners, a hacksaw, a few wood chisels, random cold chisels, hammers.
Stay safe and well.
Hope to see you all sometime soon.
