August 2020 Newsletter

Author: Roger Francis (Chairman (SWC)
Dear all,

Next  Meeting  Sometime in the future?

Please accept my apologies for the lateness of the newsletter I am afraid time and memory caught me out on this occasion.
The first thing that I need to do is pose some questions for the membership. Do you think we should try to hold a meeting, do you think it is too early? And would you be attending if I can arrange something?
I think there are possibly three options but if anyone else has any ideas please let me know:
  1. I contact Slimbridge and see if they will let us use the classroom. We could have chairs only around the walls which would allow a limited amount of social distancing.
  2. We could try booking (and paying) for a hall (if anyone knows a suitable hall let me know please) the advantage would be more space and no public.
  3. We could go for a green field site out in the open. Disadvantages are, we would have to supply our own seating, the weather! And no toilets!
If we choose one or two of these options I would need to have an idea of numbers of members that would attend.

Websites: Those of you that are Facebook followers may have seen that Floyd Scholz was offering a tutorial on carving a miniature Raven, well he has now gone to the other extreme and is showing his progress carving a full size Golden eagle, as I commented on his page what I would give to have access to a block of Tupelo that big.

BDWCA members should have had their copy of Wingspan by now and should be aware that there is a virtual competition instead of the Bakewell competition, I hope some of you will be able to enter, it is intended as a fun event that will provide photos of carvers work that will give the Association material to use in future Wingspans.

WWT: well as reported previously the Trust is open but you still need to book in advance of your visit. When you think about it the swans were just about to depart the grounds when we held our last meeting, it looks as though they will be returning before we get to hold our next meeting. The autumn migration is in full swing with large numbers of waders passing through. This weekend a Citrine wagtail caused quite a stir although it only showed for a short while.

Please let me know what you want to do re holding a meeting.

Stay safe and well .

Hope to see you all sometime soon.
