June 2020 Newsletter
Author: Roger Francis (Chairman - SWC)
Dear all,
Next Meeting Sometime in the future?
Sorry for the delay in sending this newsletter out I have been waiting for some divine inspiration for something to write, but alas nothing has been forthcoming. I hope this finds you well and coping ok with lockdown albeit that the restrictions are gradually lessening.
SWC: During lockdown I have been involved in a number of committee / group meetings on the computer using Zoom and it has made me wonder if our group would like to have an online group chat? If anyone is interested drop me an email and if I get enough responses, I will look into setting up a meeting.
WWT: Some of you may have seen that the Trust is now open (from the 10th June) but not in the usual way. Visitors (including members) will have to book in on the site website the day before visiting and numbers may be limited, there will be limited access to hides, limited toilet facilities, some of the outside kiosks will be open for food and beverages. Aviaries and children play areas will remain closed so basically you are allowed a stroll around the grounds. All events are suspended for the time being. Various waders have bred successfully and there was still a Bittern on site until mid-May. At least four Hobbies and a Merlin have been seen throughout the month.
BDWCA: Last month I mentioned that Bakewell has been cancelled for this year and that it has been decided to hold a virtual competition. The competition and rules will be sent in the next Wingspan but basically each member can enter photographs of one carving, with four photos, front, both sides and from above. So I hope those of you who are members will have a go. The latest discussion is how we can hold an Annual General Meeting and it looks as though it will be by computer using Zoom.
Wildfowl carving magazine: Anytime now the spring addition should be arriving and hopefully Del Herbert’s 10 Shore birds projects book will also become available.
Websites: Although I have included these in previous newsletters I thought I would reuse them as reference material

http://blascozumeta.com/ This is bird ringing site that I was looking at and felt that if you are lucky and they have the species you are looking for there are good photographs and reference material.
https://www.skullsite.com/ This site shows bird skulls of over 1500 species, it shows close up of the bill and gives numerous dimensions of the bare skull. If you use it don’t forget to allow a few millimetres to allow for tegument and feather covering.
Stay safe and well
Hope to see you all sometime soon.
