January 2021 Newsletter
Author: Roger Francis (Chairman (SWC)
Dear all,
Next Meeting Sometime in the future?
Happy New Year
Severn Wildlife Carvers: Well tomorrow the ninth should have been the first meeting of the year and here we are and still no sign of when we might meet up again. In an attempt to rejuvenate the group and looking forward to a time when we might be able to meet up again we would like to propose the following, rather than a group project where we all carve the same thing I suggest a theme:
“A Late 2021 Group Competition” the theme of which would be “Shore Birds” only shore birds would be eligible for entry into the competition. The Shore Bird would be any shore bird of your own choice, in a style that you prefer:
If you wish to participate but do not have the resources to hand, both Roger (email: rogfrancis@gmail.com , Tel 0117 9382) and Ian (email: ianchappell501@icloud.com Tel 01453 543482), can help with plans and blanks, however we can only offer blanks in Jelutong (price would be dependent on the size of the bird chosen)
In an earlier newsletter I mention that there was to be an auction of a Taplin Curlew and at the time I said that we do not charge enough for our birds given the suggested auction price, I was looking to see if I could find the selling price but could not find it, but did come across this sight, which you may be interested in looking at! Art must be in the eye of the beholder!!!!

During a recent Zoom carving group chat it became apparent that some of the carving competitions in the USA and Canada have already taken the decision not to hold events this year and at least one has already taken the decision to hold a “Virtual Competition” instead. The BDWCA has yet to decide the fate of the British Championships at Bakewell so it is a case of watch this space.

Jim has been busy updating it and only recently we had an interesting request from a decoy collector regarding some of the birds he has in his collection. One is a female pintail carved by Des almost 30 years ago and two carved by Mike O’Sullivan I passed his request onto both Des and Mike who were able to give him further information. The collector also has a pair of teal which look to be signed “BEQ96” I cannot come up with any information on this carver but in chatting to my font of all knowledge “Des” he found two carvers who both had three initials including a “Q” so the search is ongoing. If anyone knows a carver who uses the initials BEQ please let me know
Stay safe and well.
Hope to see you all sometime soon.
